Fandom: What's going on!?

Image
A superstar  experimenting with his talent... Two legends of the film industry sharing screen space for the very first time... An action hero plays a villain in a blockbuster franchise... OR A sacred war between good and evil... An adolescent struggling with his parent's pregnancy... A blind man witnessing a murder... What would you want to watch/be a part of/remember? Of course, the latter part sounds more interesting, but if in any case, you prefer the former, let me tell you 'YOU ARE TRAPPED!"; trapped in a maw of 'misunderstood worship'. Let me explain! We, the Indian audiences, have loved our stars as Raj, Shensha, Bhuvan, Gabbar, Baburao Ganpatrao Apte, Chandni, Mr. India, Umrao Jaan, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan etc. In other words, we were mesmerized by the characters journey and how beautifully or courageously they overcame their fears. But midway in the process we stopped looking at the characters and started lookin...

Netflix Ghoul Review: What Screenplays are capable of

Image
To start with the blog contains spoilers, so if you've not seen Ghoul and are proceeding, well, I warned you! It is always a delight to watch a good script or rather a good Screenplay. Be it a drama or a sci-fi or some fantasy, good screenplays are rare and that is why they should be cherished. To understand Ghoul we need to understand - 'What is Ghoul ?'   Ans: A ghoul is a demon or monster originating in pre-Islamic Arabian religion associated with graveyards and consuming human flesh. (Wikipedia Info) But the story dwells on the idea that Ghoul has a capability to shapeshift into its prey or the last bit. To understand Ghoul more as a screenplay we need to go according to the classic THREE ACT structure and then we can know exactly 'Why?' it is a great screenplay. ACT 1 - The Set Up  The set up is modern India in it's Socio-Political and Nationalist dilemma, and due to this situation, our protagonist Radhika Apte's character Nida Rah...

Sanju: The Wolf of Bollywood Street

Image
Ohk! Sanju is not a terrorist but he is a master filmmaker. After contemplating for a very long time between whether to write on Sanju or just let people see it and make their own opinions about the film, I couldn't resist but to write about the most awaited movie of Bollywood of 2018 #SANJU; and its place in Indian Cinema. Just the way Awards have lost their lustre in these years; from giving awards to legends like Late Kishor Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, R.D. Burman etc., now we see awards given to Roadies cum Actors and legacy actors. It's sad to see Bollywood lose the same lustre and rust in the name of Biopics like Sanju. Sanju alone is a great film, great screenplay, great storytelling, the Midas touch of Raj Kumar Hirani (RKH) itself but somewhere the movie utterly fails.... .the purpose! Biopic culture of this industry is facing the same fate as 'Acche din'; over promised and under delivered. Have you seen 'Rin' and 'Surf Excel' Ads?...

Is Bollywood, scared of the 'Horror'?

Image
We all are shit scared to watch a horror film, but we still watch it. The sole reason for doing so is that it keeps us on the edge of our seats, all the time. We many times don't care what the story holds for us but if it has some great moments, that can scare us even after the movie is done, that's some 'paisawasool factor' right there; and if such a film has a great storyline, nothing like it. The last horror movie I saw was 'Pari: not a fairy tale', and it intrigued me to this basic question, what happens to this genre when it comes to Bollywood? Producer Actor Anushka Sharma, putting her faith in this project and genre tried to revolutionize the horror industry again, but sadly all the efforts and money went in vain, yet again. A few years back we could hear Bipasha Basu saying it in the media... and taking the flag of the horror genre and before that Director-Producer Ram Gopal Verma was the one claiming the seat, these were some good oppor...

Heros and Anti-Heros: Grey is the new Black!

Image
We all admire his courage, outstanding achievements, wit, his capabilities to outsmart others and rise triumphant in the end, but in the name of 'Jihaad'. What was that again?! If we go by the definition of a hero: A person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Somewhere living in these times of mixed moralities, we have forgotten the last part of that definition 'noble qualities' and have shifted our eyes to 'courage and achievements'. Noble qualities are something a person MUST have to be called a 'Hero!'. A few days back, on 5th May'18, I saw Omerta, a biological crime drama, directed by Mr. Hansal Mehta, a prolific director, and the lead role of Ahmed Omar Saeed was played by, exceptionally talented, Rajkumar Rao. Picture Credit: Internet. On the Left is actor Mr. Rajkumar Rao and Right is Director Mr. Hansal Mehta The film was a gripping retelling of the happenings dur...

Why India can never have a real superhero?

Image
Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Superman, Batman, Bhavesh Joshi, The Punisher, Cable, Joker...wait what?! Bhavesh Joshi! Image courtesy: Internet. That's what happens when we hear an Indian superhero name, in other words,  Aapna sa lagta hai! and 'Apna' is for granted. Right? No offense JIO. But that's what we all love about Vikramaditya Motwani and Phantom Production, they break stereotypes, hence, crusade the changing era of cinema. Be it Trapped, Queen or Udta Punjab all fictional stories but just one step away from reality. A man trapped in a high rise apartment in the middle of a city, an innocent girl plans her own honeymoon to discover she's not alone in the world, an area so corrupt due to its unstable socio-political arrangments that the youth is drowned in drugs; such beautiful concepts that they look believable, rather achievable, to the Indian society. Same is the case with Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, ...

Did Marvel take DC's advise?

Image
Marvel is famous today but just recall a few years back and you will realize there were a few stand-alone superhero movies scattered here and there and no one, among us, could even guess what were we going to experience or how big the cinematic universe was going to be. In 'Batman Begins' our hero is told to use 'theatricality and deception' as 'weapons against the uninitiated'. He was also told to use small explosions and smoke to distract the opponent. Exactly! Marvel took this a step further and created MCU offline in order to make us fall in love with its characters and storylines. Marvel Stars Class Photo in honor of their 10th Anniversary is a perfect example of the theatrical genius I want to point out in this blog. Take a look at this first. OMG!   Marvel never fails to amaze us and I think the studio takes that too seriously. The events that happen or are organized by Marvel are larger than life, they have a good vibe to it, one of my pe...
